Position Overview: The Proofreader ensures that all R.H. Boyd publications and materials meet the highest standards of editorial quality, accuracy, clarity, timeliness, and consistency. This role is essential in maintaining the integrity of our brand and supporting the production of error-free books, curriculum, marketing collateral, and digital content. The Proofreader will work closely with editors, designers, production staff, marketing team, and authors to deliver polished and professional materials across all project types.
Key Responsibilities:
Editorial Accuracy and Quality Control
- Review manuscripts, page proofs, galleys, marketing materials, digital content, and internal documents for grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and typographical errors.
- Ensure consistency in style, tone, formatting, and adherence to the R.H. Boyd style guide.
- Verify accuracy of facts, scripture references, captions, callouts, headings, and indexes.
- Perform cold reads, final checks, and quality assurance reviews prior to print or digital release.
- Collaborate with editors, designers, and production staff to identify and resolve errors efficiently.
- Communicate with and train external editorial team as needed to resolve errors, etc.
- Track and communicate corrections using proofreading marks, digital annotation tools, and project management systems.
- Manage multiple deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Assist with maintaining and updating style sheets and editorial standards.
- Ensure all content aligns with the mission, values, and voice of R.H. Boyd.
- Protect brand consistency across product lines, curriculum, books, events, and marketing materials.
- Provide constructive editorial feedback when necessary to enhance clarity, readability, and overall quality.
- Submit completed materials in a timely manner according to production schedule.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Publishing, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional proofreading or copyediting experience, preferably within book publishing or curriculum development.
- Mastery of grammar, punctuation, and spelling; strong command of editorial best practices.
- Proficiency with Chicago Manual of Style (required).
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to spot inconsistencies quickly.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong proficiency in Adobe InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong knowledge of grammar, style guides, and editorial standards (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, American Psychological Association Style).
- Familiarity with faith-based content and cultural sensitivity, particularly related to the Black church and African American history.
- Experience working with diverse authors and content related to faith, social justice, or community engagement.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback.
- Understanding of print production and digital publishing workflows.
